The bufones are natural phenomena caused by the effect of sea erosion and rain on the limestone rock, giving rise to cracks and chimneys that connect the sea with the land. The blow of the calm waves against the cliffs causes the expulsion of the compressed air in the galleries, however, on days of heavy swell air and water escape to the outside at high pressure with jets of water that reach great height.
The best known in Asturias are the Bufones de Pría, in the town of Llames. There you should leave the car and continue walking along the impressive cliffs that we will see in front. On days when the sea is rough the show is amazing, it is a fantastic place, the views from the cliffs are worth the trip and if the tide is high the show is unimaginable. There is a route of the bufones, with start and end in Llames, of low difficulty and a duration of about four hours approximately that is worth doing to enjoy its beauty.

The spectacular cliffs of this part of the eastern coast of Asturias hide this curious spectacle that is activated when the tide rises and there are waves. To feel the living force of the water and listen to how it roars, as if it were an inner force, is to delight in the wonders that nature can do on its own.
A bufón or bufadero is a vertical hole in a rocky formation of a cliff through which the sea water flows when the waves beat strongly and there is high tide, causing the propulsion of a jet that comes out under pressure through the hole, as if it were a geyser. Its sound when the water comes out, as if it were a geyser, gives the hole its name.
It is convenient to park the car in the village of Llames de Pría, from a road that leads to the beach of Guadamía, limit of the municipality of Llanes with the neighboring council of Ribadesella. This beach is of singular beauty, as it is formed between a narrow corridor between two rocky walls, giving the sensation of having a certain fluvial character. Being so narrow and long at the same time, at low tide the sand covers almost all the space, transforming the appearance of the beach in a curious esplanade.

Este verde rincón de Asturias, donde las montañas de los Picos se sumergen en el salvaje océano Atlántico entre playas con acantilados y pueblos pesqueros de tejados rojos, ha escapado a la atención de la mayoría de los visitantes de España. Pero no la nuestra. Hemos venido a contemplar los impresionantes espiráculos de los Bufones de Pría, por los que el océano emite espectaculares géiseres, que gorgotean y gruñen como si estuvieran vivos; razón suficiente para venir. Y luego, a un corto paseo, descubrimos estos apartamentos de piedra, tallados a mano con técnicas tradicionales, pero con interiores contemporáneos con mucha madera natural. Un remanso de calma, el lugar perfecto para establecerse.
Sus salones de estilo contemporáneo cuentan con ventanales y obras de arte de amigos del artista vasco y propietario Santos Arribas. Las terrazas privadas ofrecen largas vistas sobre el ganado que pasta suavemente; hay una brillante piscina infinita desde la que observar las aves y las espectaculares puestas de sol. Santos y Ana, que viven en el lugar, son anfitriones relajados pero atentos que le ayudarán a descubrir esta Costa Verde.

Las vistas de los acantilados justifican por sí solas la excursión, y si la marea está alta el espectáculo es único.La “ruta de los Bufones”, con inicio y final en Llames, es un paseo fácil apto para todas las edades que dura unas cuatro horas. Es una excursión inolvidable.
El invierno es una época perfecta para visitar los Bufones en toda su plenitud, pero hay que tener precaución, así que si decides ir a ver el espectáculo de los Bufones y escuchar sus rugidos en un día de tormenta, ve y disfrútalos, pero por favor no vayas en coche, están a un corto y hermoso paseo.
La playa tiene unos 800 m de longitud, perpendicular a la costa, la anchura del canal es de unos 80 metros, la arena es blanca y fina, y la profundidad media en la zona de baño es de 1,50 metros, sin desniveles ni depresiones repentinas. El agua suele estar asentada y ser clara. Está libre de rocas y algas, hay pocas olas y no hay riesgo de fuertes corrientes.
Los Bufones de Pría son un fenómeno natural creado por la erosión del mar y la lluvia sobre la piedra caliza, formando grietas y chimeneas que conectan el mar con la tierra. Cuando el mar Cantábrico muestra toda su furia con sus fuertes mareas, las olas se abren paso en el fondo de los Bufones por la base del acantilado y el agua sube por el estrecho canal provocando un silbido o resoplido característico, de donde viene el nombre de “espiráculo”. El chorro de agua que sale del bufón puede alcanzar más de veinte metros de altura.
