Mercadona (valenciano: [meɾkaˈðɔna], español: [meɾkaˈðona]) es una cadena de supermercados familiar española, líder en el país. Francisco Roig Ballester y su esposa, Trinidad Alfonso Mocholi, fundaron la empresa en 1977,[2] que comenzó como una pequeña carnicería en Tavernes Blanques, un pueblo de Valencia.[3][4] Juan Roig asumió el papel de director general en 1981 y desde entonces la empresa se ha expandido por todo el país. En la década de 1990, Juan Roig supervisó una serie de cambios en toda la empresa y reveló la nueva fachada de Mercadona, capaz de competir con su competidor francés Carrefour y la cooperativa Eroski. Mercadona tiene 1.636 tiendas en las 17 comunidades autónomas de España, Ceuta, Melilla y en el norte de Portugal.

Desde sus días como carnicería en 1977, Mercadona se expandió a ocho tiendas en 1981 y a 1.148 tiendas en octubre de 2013, con más en camino. En la actualidad, posee el 13,5% de la superficie total de venta de alimentos en España[6] y obtuvo más de 508 millones de euros de beneficios en el ejercicio fiscal de 2012[7].

Su director general, Juan Roig, planea llevar Mercadona a Italia o Francia, pero es posible que modifique su modelo de negocio español para competir en los nuevos mercados[8]. Se le citó en The Economist diciendo: “Debemos aprender todo de todos”[9].
