Excursion picos de europa

Excursion picos de europa

Picos de europa villages

Starting from Poncebos, we go up the Canal del Tejo. It is only 500m and the Canal forms a narrow gorge, equally or more impressive than the Cares itself. It is described in the Poncebos-Bulnes itinerary.

You should leave the car at the Ercina Lake, the second of the Covadonga Lakes. Looking from the parking towards the lake we will observe an uphill path that borders the lake on the left side, following it we will arrive without problems to the Vega de Ario Refuge.

The refuge is located in a large esplanades that form a kind of natural balcony over the depression of the Cares. On the other side of this imposing rises the Massif Central, the view is breathtaking.

Just before reaching the lake of Ercina (lakes of Covadonga), just on the hill from where you begin to see the lake opens a dirt road to our right. We can enter it with the car, there is the possibility of turning around a little further on or leave the car and walk along the track.

In about two kilometers we will be in the Mirador del Rey, which has a nice view and stands on a curious forest of holly trees. The route of the track is flat, dirt and bumpy, but passable by car with caution. The track crosses beautiful meadows and you can enjoy wide views.

The Cares route joins the towns of Cain (León) and Puente Poncebos (Asturias), or vice versa, and is a classic hiking route in Picos de Europa. The path runs halfway up a huge natural gap that clearly separates the Western (or Cornion) and Central (or Urrieles) massifs.

Its attractions are that it runs through what used to be a beautiful glacial valley of which the moraine known as the Llomba del Toro remains as a witness, as well as the arrival at the Refuge of Áliva, which is in an ideal location.

This route in Picos de Europa (Western Massif), has no difficulty and is ideal for families, because from every corner of the forest seems to emerge a gnome or a fairy (or better the trasgu and a xana, for those who prefer the local mythology).

It is also one of the most entertaining routes in Picos de Europa, since in addition to passing by the famous lakes of Enol and La Ercina, both of glacial origin, you will visit the Buferrera Mines, the best conditioned for the visit in all Picos de Europa.

You must leave the car at the Ercina Lake, the second of the Covadonga Lakes. Looking from the parking towards the lake we will observe an uphill path that borders the lake on the left side, following it we will arrive without problems to the Vega de Ario Refuge.

A few hundred meters from the beginning of the track there is a shelter with a bar around which free camping is allowed, although in summer it is very crowded and does not have the comforts of a good campsite nor can you enjoy the isolation in nature of a free camping because of the access by car along the track.

The Medieval Tower of Mogrovejo and the beautiful village of Mogrovejo are essential places to visit. The same can be said of Valdelucielo, La Lomba del Toro, the glacial moraine, the Invernales de Iguedri or the beautiful village of Espinama with its characteristic colonial charm surrounded by natural beauty.
