Parque del retiro madrid – wikipedia

Our tour through all the gates of El Retiro begins with the Puerta de la Independencia, located opposite the Puerta de Alcalá and considered the main entrance to the Park. This entrance was built in 1885 by José Urioste y Velada from the gate made by Juan de Villanueva for the gardens of the Casino de la Reina. The name is taken from the adjacent square and refers to the war against the French.

The next access has the name of Puerta de Sainz de Baranda in honor of Pedro Sainz de Baranda y Gorriti, first mayor of Madrid, since until the proclamation of the Constitution of 1812 were called corregidores.

The Puerta del Doce de Octubre owes its name to the street of the same name located in front of it. From this door there is direct access to the Cecilio Rodriguez Gardens, named in honor of the Jardinero Mayor del Retiro.

The Puerta de Murillo is considered a service access to the sports area of La Chopera. It takes its name from the nearby Plaza de Murillo, where there is a statue of the painter, the work of Sabino de Medina in 1871, which also gives its name to one of the entrances to the Prado Museum.
