The foster homes are a tool of the Fundación Protectora de Animales del Principado de Asturias (La Protectora) to develop its purpose of helping animals that are in a state of neglect, wandering through municipalities where there is no collection of animals or because their health makes it inadvisable to stay in a shelter.
This is a volunteer activity that takes place in the volunteer’s own home, those people who are responsible for one or more dogs or cats of La Protectora until they find a permanent home or for the period previously agreed between the parties.
– General fostering: consists of a temporary or definitive collaboration until adoption is achieved. The purpose of this type of fostering is, above all, to have clear information about the behavior of the animal within the family environment, data that will facilitate its adoption, as well as to accustom the animal to living with families, thus increasing the possibility of a good and faster adaptation when it is adopted.

By adopting a dog or cat you will save two lives: that of your new friend and that of another abandoned dog or cat that will be able to take its place in our shelter. There are many abandoned animals that we cannot take in due to lack of space. We will only be able to help them when the ones we currently take care of are adopted.
Usually the process of adaptation lasts about 3-4 weeks, after which we will have a dog that already knows the environment, that can be left alone without problems, etc. This period, well managed, becomes a golden opportunity to create a solid and lasting bond with the new member of the family. However, its mismanagement (for example, by the use of corrections and punishments) can ruin the bond and begin to cement future problems such as fears, separation anxiety, etc.
The second block would comprise from 10 to 15/20 days. In this period there should be a gradual increase of stimuli: walks a little longer, a little more enriched, going to places with more people, noises, etc. We can also slightly increase physical contact.
