-That simple lodging was gaining in prestige and reputation, so much so that in 1797 it changed owners (some brothers surnamed Espino) and annexed the building next door. But this was not the end of the growth of this buoyant business which, in 1891, took over building 17 on Postas Street.
-Its success? Well, its location, its good prices (in fact, at the beginning of 1900 they offered lodgings for one peseta) and, to tell the truth, they didn’t have much competition before the beginning of the 20th century. Later, luxury establishments such as the Palace or the Ritz would arrive and the hegemony of this place began to waver.
-The whole history of this magical establishment was close to disappearing after being closed for almost 4 decades. However, in 2006 it reopened its doors, now as a 4-star boutique hotel, with the Petit Palace chain and with all luxury of details.
-The Posada del Peine has had its cameos in literature, for example in Fortunata y Jacinta, by Pérez Galdós or in the saga of Captain Alatriste, but that is not the end of its link with literature, it also hosted, among many others, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

Next to the Plaza Mayor is the Posada del Peine, the oldest hotel in Madrid, is in what is known as the Madrid de los Austrias, the area with more history of the capital, a step away from the Royal Palace, the Puerta de Sol, or the Gran Via, a unique location for sightseeing in Madrid.
The inn came to have more than 150 rooms of all kinds, the most luxurious with balcony, the least without window and just enough space for a bed. It was a place where the continuous entry and exit of travelers caused a hectic atmosphere of great movement, so much so that the phrase was popularized from parents to children “This looks like the inn of the comb” to refer to the disorder and disorder inside the house. A place with a constant coming and going of people, with labyrinthine corridors to communicate with the rooms, where famous people such as Gustavo Adolfo Becquer or the painter Solana stayed, surely it kept more than one secret. It is said that in room 126 there was, hidden inside a cupboard, a narrow staircase, so low that it had to be climbed bent over. It led to a room without doors or windows on the upper floor. When it was made, by whom and for what reason, is left to the imagination because it was suppressed in some of the remodeling and today we only have the oral history of the mysterious room.
